Heartburn & Acid Reflux

Did you know the FDA issued a warning about proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) – Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid? The warning says “possible increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine with high doses or long-term use.”  Subjects who used PPIs for more than one year increased risk of hip fracture by 44 percent compared to subjects who didn’t use PPIs. I am very concerned about this drug in regards to hip fractures. You do have natural alternative choices.

If nothing else you should ask your physician if you can take a lower dose or be on this drug for a shorter duration of therapy.

PPIs also increase the risk of digestive inflammation and diarrhea caused by a bacterium that’s usually kept under control by stomach acid.

An alternative treatment plan to relieve heartburn and acid reflux starts with a probiotic supplement that provides highly viable, pure strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis along with supportive factors. This helps maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora and is designed to provide intestinal, digestive, and immune system support on multiple levels. This is an inexpensive and very effective method. Ultra Flora Plus (1 capsule 1-2 times daily), an acidophilus supplement is available through my website

In step two, believe it or not, acid is added, along with digestive enzymes – to complement the natural production of digestive agents in the stomach. It isn’t acid that’s the problem (you need it desperately for digestion); it’s acid reaching the esophagus that is the problem. Proper digestion allows for higher concentration of acid, yet protecting the esophagus. I do that using Metagest (1-3 tablets with meals) and Endefen (2 level tablespoons with 2-4 oz. of juice or water 1-2 times daily).
