Type 2 Diabetes & Turmeric – Curcuplex from Xymogen

When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going to cells, it can lead to diabetes complications.

Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. Diabetes is also the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower-limb amputations and new cases of blindness among adults in the U.S.

In this study, extracts from turmeric (curcumin) help manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Daily supplements of curcuminoids for three months was associated with improved glycemic control in 50 type 2 diabetics, compared to placebo, according to findings published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research 2012.

Ccurcuminoids may have an anti-diabetic effect by decreasing serum fatty acid possibly through the promotion of fatty acid oxidation and utilization. Curcumin, the natural pigment that gives the spice turmeric its yellow color, has become one of my favorite supplements for patients with inflammation, arthritis, and those with stenosis. Curcumin has been linked to a range of health benefits, including potential protection against Alzheimer’s disease and protection against heart failure, diabetes and arthritis.

In this study the recommendation was 300 mg of curcuminoids per day for three months. I use much higher amounts for my stenotic patients in conjunction with laser therapy.

Results showed that the curcuminoids group displayed a significant decrease in blood glucose levels, hemoglobin A1C (a marker of the long-term presence of excess glucose in the blood), and insulin resistance, compared to placebo. There was also a significant reduction in free fatty acids in the curcuminoids group, the researchers said.

I feel that it is important to take curcuminoids as a supplement and I recommend Xymogens Curcuplex tablets.

Eat to feel great – Paleo Diet

I’m still recommending the eat like a cave man Paleo Diet to lose weight, build muscle and feel healthy. The “Paleolithic”, or Paleo diet consists only of meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and mushrooms. I have way too many clients that are getting great workouts, but  few that  follow a  healthy diet. I offer individual diet recommendations to all of my patients, and most of the time the program is the Mediterranean Diet or Paleo Diet, or a combo of the two.

I really want my clients to feel healthy. I see so many people with all kinds of  problems, especially inflammation, arthritis, over- weight issues, aches and pains, and all of these problems can be helped with diet and supplements. After 3-4 weeks on the diet, I see clients able to drop excess weight and achieve better body fat percentages.

The key to the Paleo diet is to avoid all refined sugars, grains, dairy products, beans, legumes and anything processed. Though difficult, sticking to a Paleo diet fits the human genetic makeup better than most modern diets because it represents the foods that our ancestors ate and thrived on. The Paleo diet has other benefits, including helping to clear up acne.

The Paleo Diet might not entirely clear up acne in every single person who has acne, but it will almost always have an important positive effect on blood sugar and weight.
Call me for a session so we can individualise a program for you.

Supplements used to lower cholesterol

I’ve been upset about cholesterol lowering drugs for years. I want what’s best  for you. My practice and the techniques I use are based on enhancing the nervous system through more natural alternative therapies. Cholesterol is integral to your cell membranes and is critical for nerve function. Every nerve in the body is covered in fat (cholesterol). Sixty percent of the brain is composed of fat (cholesterol). And cholesterol is vital for the production of sex hormones. Lowering cholesterol levels too much can have a very dangerous effect on brain and nerve function. From everything I read I believe that a healthy cholesterol level is less than 200 mg/dl and greater than 110 mg/dl. Some studies even suggest a cholesterol of 230 mg/dl is healthy. Strive for LDL less than 100 mg/dl; HDL for males – greater than 50 mg/dl, HDL for females greater than 60 mg/dl. I am now actually  seeing patients on cholesterol lowering drugs with levels too low. Cholesterol is so important that your body does not rely on food sources alone.

Nutrition + Weight training + Cardio

In my practice, I educate clients that every intelligent weight loss program needs three core elements: Nutrition, resistance training (bodyweight, free-weight &/or kettlebells), and cardiovascular training.  Lean, muscular, flexible, pain-free, healthy and vital are the goals. The weight training helps us build strength and increase muscle mass (see my 20 minute workouts); the cardiovascular training increases endurance and improves the function of our cardivascular system (see my 20 minute workouts). The nutrition is as important as any. When intelligent nutrition is combined with intelligent training, results are amplified. The results have been exceeding realistic expectations: lean muscle mass is dramatically increased, body fat is dramatically decreased. Every health goal can be enhanced by increasing muscle mass and by decreasing body fat percentiles. Want to fit into your favorite pair of jeans again?  Increase muscle and decrease body fat. Want to run faster? Increase muscle and decrease body fat. Want to look better and feel better? Increase muscle and decrease body fat.

I don’t have all the answers but I am certain that to elevate our health we need to utilize nutrition, resistance weight training, and cardio. You cannot overemphasis one aspect of the three elements to the near exclusion of the other two. Realistically and empirically, the dramatic progress comes from concentrating on weak points and not continually playing to our strengths.

Headaches Update

Often people who get headaches have habits that are causing the headaches, but have not made the connection between their lifestyle and their symptoms. One obvious thing that can be done is to quit eating refined sugar and to eat regular meals. Research has shown that subjects who suffer from migraine headaches have blood sugar level problems (reactive hypoglycemia). A diet free of sugar, and eating six small meals per day improved headaches.

The kinds of fats in the diet can also play a role in headaches. Migraines may be linked to blood lipids, much the same way that cardiovascular disease is. Supplementation with fish oil reduced the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Indeed, many research articles have shown the value of omega-3 fatty acids for pain and inflammation. EPA-DHA 720 by Metagenicsis a very pure source of omega-3 fatty acids, free of dioxins and mercury.

Cinnamon improves blood sugar, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels

The natural ingredient cinnamon extract can help prevent type 2 diabetes: In one particular  research study, more than 20 subjects with metabolic syndrome (a key risk factor for developing diabetes) were given a cinnamon extract or placebo for 12 weeks. Those in the cinnamon group ended up with significantly lower levels of fasting blood sugar compared to placebo.

Subjects in the cinnamon group also increased lean muscle mass, while losing body fat and lowering blood pressure.

Researchers found that one gram of cinnamon extract is the amount required, taken for 40 days, to  improve blood sugar, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels.

Endefen (1 1/2 scoops)  by Metagenics has cinnamon, Plantain fruit, green tea extract and other ingredients that provide the benefits I mention in this post. Endefen also supports the integrity of the gastric lining, promotes healthy gut flora, and GI immune system function. Order Endefen @ www.DrJeffreyTucker.meta-ehealth.com
