TG/HDL ratio

Most places you look these days are saying the TG/HDL ratio is the most important test of blood lipids, and should be under 2.0, or preferably under 1.0. Beyond that there is CRP, and a bunch of different, more expensive tests:

Alzheimer’s disease(AD).

Question: Jeff, my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease(AD). Any suggestions? Answer: Beta-amyloid protein creates plaque that weakens nerve cell function in the brain.

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take that may reduce risk of amyloid buildup…
Exercise daily
Increase omega-3 fatty acid intake
Increase vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid intake (these vitamins reduce homocysteine, which has been linked to amyloid formation)
Use Supplementary curcumin (antioxidant and anti- inflammatory properties are believed to break up amyloid)
Increase intake of EGCG (a green tea flavonoid)

Oncoplex SGS – What you need to know about broccoli

– Found in broccoli (sprouts & seeds), Brussel sprouts & Kale.
Most potent transcription inducer of phase II & III detoxification & antioxidant enzymes via Nrf2.
– Increases production of antimicrobial peptides
– Bacteriocidal against H. pylori
– Anti-inflammatory: indirect inhibition of COX-2 enzymes
– Protective against airway inflammation (asthma, COPD, diesel exhaust)
– Decreases endothelial inflammation (diabetes, CVD); lowers blood pressure & LDL-cholesterol in lab animals.
– Protection against ARMD
– Neuroprotective against Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s & Huntington’s Disease
– Resveratrol & sulphoraphane may be a viable approach for the treatment of glioma (Neurochemical research. 35(1):152-161, Jan 2010)
– May offer a possible treatment option for RA (Arthritis & Rheumatism. 62(1):159-170, 2010)
– Potential treatment for oxidant-induced airway disease (Riedl MA et al)
– Anti-inflammatory effects (Juurlink B, et al 2004)
– Protects against oxidative damage to retinal pigments in the eyes (age related macular degeneration) (Xiangqum, G et al 2004)
– A broccoli rich diet was found to perturb several pathways that lead to prostate cancer, including growth factor pathways, inflammation and insulin signaling (Traca M, et al 2008)
– Sulforaphane delayed the appearance of tumors (Zhang, Y et al 1994)

To get these benefits I recommend OncopPLEX ES. It provides 290-320 mmol/gram of Sulforaphane – the amount found in approximately 3.75 pounds of broccoli!!!

Strategies for Life Extension

This is a post that mentions the current methods scientists are telling us we can extend our lifespan:
Calorie restriction:
– 30% overall reduction but it must be nutritionally adequate –
– Excessive restriction leads to muscle wasting
– Proven to increase mean life span
– — Rodents restricted to 40-60% of calories: 65% increase in mean life span
– — 50% increase in maximum life span if restrictions start before puberty

– increase mean life span by 30% for mammals
– no proven increase in maximum life span
– some studies are contradictory

Sirtuin activators (resveratrol)
– prolong life span of Saccharomyces cerevisiae by 70%
– increased life span for fruit flies, nematodes, killifish

In addition, I believe we need manual joint therapy and the use of the Deep Muscle Stimulator (DMS) that allows our joints to maintain mobility and stability; our muscles need to maintain mass through proper strength training; we need to maintain lung capacity by doing some cardio sprint work, and our diet needs to include proper antioxidants.
I recommend the Mitochondrial Renewal Kit by XYMOGEN and the XYMOGEN functional food shake called i5 as part of meeting life extension goals.

Biomarkers: The 10 Determinants of Aging You Can Control

William Evan & Irwin Rosenberg, Tufts University.
– Muscle mass
– Strength
– Basal Metabolic Rate
– Percent of body fat
– Aerobic capacity
– Blood sugar tolerance
– Cholesterol
– Blood pressure
– Bone density
– Temperature regulation
I agree with these authors that these 10 things can be modified and positively influenced by lifestyle changes. This is the approach I take to patient care. It involves hands-on body therapy, diet and nutrition coaching, and exercise training.

Osteoarthritis supplement program

I had a question from a Doctor about what nutritional recommendations I use for patients with Osteoarthritis. Here is my response.

Make sure they are consistent for at least 3 months on an Anti-inflammatory diet. Depending on the client I use either the Mediterranean Diet or Paleo Diet.

The following are supplements from my Metagenics site ( that I recommend:
If it is a light to moderate case:
Kaprex — 1-2 softgel twice daily
Non-responders by day 5, move to 6 softgels daily
Time to benefit: 2 to 10 days.
Kaprex is an herbal supplement that provides natural joint relief that is easy on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It works by interfering with signals in the body that initiate the production of damaging compounds that cause minor pain and negatively impact cartilage and other joint tissues.
Chondro-Relief Intensive Care – 2-3 capsules twice daily
Chondro-Relief Intensive Care supports healthy joint function with Glucosamine HCI, Chondroitin Sulfate, Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane (MSM), P. Canaliculus, Hyaluronic Acid, and Avocado/Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU) in addition to other antioxidants that support healthy connective tissue.
EPA-DHA 6:1 Enteric Coated — 2 softgels three times daily. Omega 3 fatty acids are important for patients with chronic inflammatory conditions.
D3 5,000 — 1 tablet two times daily. Get there blood level checked & then dose up or down.

If it is a moderate to severe case:
UltraInflamX Plus 360 — 2 scoops twice daily. They make a shake in the morning & afternoon. It is a Medical food for inflammation and biotransformation.
Chondro-Relief Intensive Care – 2-4 capsules twice daily
EPA-DHA 6:1 Enteric Coated — 2 softgels three times daily. Omega 3 fatty acids providing a ratio appropriate for patients with chronic inflammatory conditions.
D3 5,000 — 1 tablet three times daily.

I have clients use Capsaicin cream and rub it on the involved area at least four times per day.
