First, laser the knee area. Laser is a deep heat that does provide pain relief.
Next let’s talk about weight loss if needed. Every pound you lose reduces stress across the knee by 3-4 pounds, even higher if you climb stairs or attempt to run. Don’t run, jump, or do anything that involves impact to your knee.
Next let’s talk about natural remedies like fish oil and Bosweillia as effective and helpful. Use BioFreeze cream to rub on the knee! Let me put kinesio-tape on your knee.
Next let me teach you the proper exercises. The best long-term method to relieve pain and restore function is consistent low impact exercise. Exercises that stretch and strengthen the muscles around the knee, not only provide support and maintain motion of the joint, but stimulate endorphins and intrinsic growth hormone release — both of which help to relieve the pain of arthritis.
Chiropractic. The goal of this treatment is to significantly decrease symptoms such as pain, tightness, stiffness, soreness, aches, and improve athletic performance, mobility, and your ability to perform general activities.
Laser. Evidence for the effectiveness of laser is strong. Patients feel the relief especially for knee pain and TMJ pain
Shockwave therapy. This form of medical treatment is acknowledged as a means for enhancing scar tissue mobility and breaking up muscle tightness and muscle and joint adhesions. It is also helpful for chronic pain reduction and improved mobility. It helps osteoarthritic symptoms with improved functional mobility and quality of life.
Along with laser, Deep Muscle Stimulator (DMS), shockwave therapy is effective for pain control of osteoarthritis of the knee, neck pain, low back pain, and increasing mobility.
Deep Muscle Stimulator Massage. Followed by hands on therapy, DMS is the most commonly utilized treatment in my office. Patients feel better after this type of massage than receiving a regular hand massage. They have significant improvements in pain, stiffness, and physical function.
Dietary supplements. I use a variety of products from Metagenics, Xymogen, Designs for Heath, and Standard Process for joint pain, arthritis, inflammation, and weight loss.
Widening the integrative approach to treatment
There is emerging evidence that integrating multiple conventional and alternative therapies such as chiropractic, exercise, laser, shockwave, DMS, lymph therapy provide the best results for patients.
If you are a person who still has pain and diminished mobility who has already explored other therapies and doctors but have been disappointed, I would like the opportunity for you and I to meet. I continuously evaluate the increasing body of evidence in support of new therapies, and I am confident in offering my patients a wider range of choices than standard chiropractic care.

I coined the term POLITE Method for how I treat my patients. The ‘P’ is for improving posture and creating a plan of treatment.
The ‘OL’ is optimal loading. This means figuring out self-management activities for knee pain that are not too easy and not too difficult.
The ‘I’ in instruments that I use in the office for knee pain such as laser, DMS, and shockwave therapy that give effective short- and long-term pain relief benefits.
‘T’ is for taping the knee and I’ll teach you how to apply simple kinesio-tape to the knee for pain relief.
‘E’ is for education regarding the progressive nature of osteoarthritis (OA) and for pain management education; joint-sparing exercise advice including daily walking, balance tips, and falls prevention; and emotional and cognitive skills to improve quality of life; Eating for weight loss for those who are overweight or obese. Weight loss has been shown to improve mobility and reduce pain. For every one pound of weight lost, there is a 4-pound reduction in the load exerted on the knee for each step taken during daily activities. A weight loss of only 15 pounds can cut knee pain in half for overweight individuals with arthritis.
A low-carbohydrate diet has been shown to reduce weight in obese patients by ?10% and lead to improvements in self-reported scores for overall progress and functional ability.
If you like my POLITE approach call 310-444-9393 for an appointment.
If you have any of the above, have you tried Pneumatic Lymphatic Pump Therapy?
One of the most neglected systems of the body is the Lymphatic system. An innovative treatment for chronic pain, foot pain, hip pain, inflammation, neck pain, shoulder pain, & TMJ pain is Lymph Drainage Therapy (DLT). In my office I use state of the art technology called LymphaTouch for DLT. Benefits of the LympaTouch Pump Therapy include reduction in limb circumference, pain, increase in range of motion, scar mobility and improved functioning of the immune system. The immune system is stimulated through increased lymph flow. The additional flow carries more antigens to the lymph nodes, thereby increasing antibody/antigen contact. This has been found to help with chronic or subacute inflammatory processes — chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune disease, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, arthritis, acne and eczema.

Just one session of moderate exercise can act as an anti-inflammatory. A recent study found one session of about 20 minutes of moderate treadmill exercise resulted in a five percent decrease in the number of stimulated immune cells producing TNF (a natural anti-inflammatory that the brain makes). If you have arthritis, fibromyalgia and obesity let’s talk so we can figure out how to get you started to build up to 20 minutes and tap into the bodies natural ability to heal.
Scar tissue (adhesions) may cause pain, weakness, and limitation in motion. Characteristics of scar formation in muscles, fascial tissue, and joints is that:
It is weaker than normal surrounding tissue
It’s less elastic than normal tissue
It’s vulnerable to re-injury
It can be a cause of chronic muscle and joint pain.
Normal tissue is meant to slide and glide over one another and when it doesn’t you might feel stiffness. Worse, all nerves (which are sensitive) were meant to slide and glide as well, and when nerves become entrapped in scar tissue it can create painful and irritating symptoms.
I am a scar tissue expert. Most doctors use hands-on manual therapy and maybe have an old ultrasound machine or some type of electrical stimulation with pads. These work OK, but if you need real therapy and have chronic issues related to scar formation you need more help. I have more tools to break up scar tissue formation than any other doctor I know of. Scar tissue removal starts with warmth to the tissues. I have two different laser machines (Theralase & LightForce) which provide deep, deep, heat; I have two shockwave machine (a Piezowave & a Zimmer) to break up difficult and deep layers of scar tissue; I have the Deep Muscle Stimulator (DMS) for increased blood flow; I have the Rapid Release Technology for superficial fascia restrictions; I have a state of the art Lymphatic drainage machine and multiple hand held tools called ‘instrument assisted soft tissue’ devices.
My scar tissue methods are helping people to decrease symptoms and increase range of motion. Call 310-444-9393 for an evaluation appointment.
Prolonged sitting is a health risk. Sit to stand desk workstations allow you to have greater movement variations reducing postural stress. A sit-stand desk may help you burn more calories throughout the day.
Workers who used sit-stand desks were 78% more likely to report a pain-free day than those who used regular workstations, according to a Stanford University back pain study by Ognibene published in the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, March 2016.
A 2015 study published in the Journal of Public Health shows that sit-to-stand desks in classrooms appear to be an effective way of reducing sedentary behavior (prolonged sitting) in a diverse sample of children (Clemes).
A 2011 study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that when workers are equipped with sit-stand workstations, prolonged sitting is reduced and mood states improve (Pronk NP),
During the 2013 meeting the American Medical Association adopted policy recognized the potential risks of prolonged sitting and encouraging employers, employees and others to make available alternatives to sitting, such as sit-stand desks.
If you need a doctors note for a sit-stand desk at your workplace, please call the office to make an appointment at 310-444-9393 so we can discuss your individual needs. I will share my posture recommendations and can help facilitate getting you a proper work station environment.
I don’t care what you may have heard about taking fish oils in the media, I am definite about there positive health value. I find that the majority of my patients should take fish oil supplements.
Why Take Fish Oils
Three main reasons: 1) it benefits your brain 2) it benefits your heart 3) it benefits your joints. Omega-3s play a role in protection against Alzheimer’s Disease, depression, and cancer; can help with acne, arthritis, psoriasis and other skin conditions; and can also help with inflammatory bowel disorders. It’s linked with improved brain function. The evidence FOR IT IS JUST TOO GOOD!
If you have a history of heart problems, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, arthritis, chronic pain, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, skin problems, or asthma, then you should probably supplement. If you’re concerned because you don’t eat more than two servings of fish a week, you should supplement. If you eat a lot of fish, don’t eat processed foods, and eat pastured animals and eggs, you may not need to supplement.
About Fish Oil Supplements
Like any oil you want it to be fresh and pure. A good quality is about the type of fish, dosage, freshness, purity, and how natural it is. The best fish oils come from cold water fish. Look for oil that contains at least 60 percent Omega-3.
How Much to Take
The general consensus is that adults who don’t eat a lot of salmon, grass-fed beef, or other foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids and those who eat foods high in Omega 6 fatty acids (nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, and factory-farmed meats) should aim to get between two and four grams of EPA/DHA per day.
Which Fish Oil Should I Take? I recommend fish oil from Metagenics. I also recommendtrying Krill oil from Xymogen. Take either gel capsuleds or liquid (depending on your desire). I don’t get fish oil burps with these brands! Go to my home page and click on these brand links to order.
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) has popularized our awareness of checking for asymmetries in the body during movement. Muscle strains and joint dysfunctions caused by asymmetrical movements over time can generally be reduced by treatment using the Deep Muscle Stimulator (DMS).
The DMS is a hand held device that delivers strong vibration, oscillation and percussion. Use of the DMS appears to reduce stiffness by signaling inhibition of the sympathetic nervous system. Palpate tight or stiff fascial tissue or a taut and tender muscle fiber, and then apply the Deep Muscle Stimulator (DMS) device for approximately two to three minutes, the post treatment/application will leave the skin red, warm and it will palpate as “softer.” This probably has to do with local changes in the arterioles and capilliaries and the mixing up of tissue viscosity.
To really appreciate the DMS, we need to review some neurology. Golgi receptors are located in dense connective tissues such as ligaments, joint capsules (Golgi end organs) and around myotendinous junctions (Golgi tendon organs).1 Golgi receptors are stimulated by slow active stretching or strong local pressure resulting in a lowered firing rate of associated alpha motor neurons via the spinal cord, this leads to decreased active muscle tone in related muscle fibers. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going to cells, it can lead to diabetes complications.
Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. Diabetes is also the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower-limb amputations and new cases of blindness among adults in the U.S.
In this study, extracts from turmeric (curcumin) help manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Daily supplements of curcuminoids for three months was associated with improved glycemic control in 50 type 2 diabetics, compared to placebo, according to findings published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research 2012.
Ccurcuminoids may have an anti-diabetic effect by decreasing serum fatty acid possibly through the promotion of fatty acid oxidation and utilization. Curcumin, the natural pigment that gives the spice turmeric its yellow color, has become one of my favorite supplements for patients with inflammation, arthritis, and those with stenosis. Curcumin has been linked to a range of health benefits, including potential protection against Alzheimer’s disease and protection against heart failure, diabetes and arthritis.
In this study the recommendation was 300 mg of curcuminoids per day for three months. I use much higher amounts for my stenotic patients in conjunction with laser therapy.
Results showed that the curcuminoids group displayed a significant decrease in blood glucose levels, hemoglobin A1C (a marker of the long-term presence of excess glucose in the blood), and insulin resistance, compared to placebo. There was also a significant reduction in free fatty acids in the curcuminoids group, the researchers said.
I feel that it is important to take curcuminoids as a supplement and I recommend Xymogens Curcuplex tablets.
